Sean Sherk drops by for our first Friday Open Mat

Nov.2009 266

What a way to kick off our Friday open mat.  We were lucky to have former UFC Lightweight Champion Sean Sherk drop by and train with us for our first Friday night open mat.  Sean just happened to be in town for the day and was looking for a place to train.  He was very fun to train with and gave out a lot of pointers to all the students he worked with.  It just always seems like you never know who will be stopping by to train with us.  Let that be a lesson to all those who skip class, you never know what you are missing!

Andy “Shaggy” Acker Victorious in Pro MMA Debut

A big congratulations go out to Andy “Shaggy” Acker for winning his professional Mixed Martial Arts debut last night at Madtown Throwdown 21.  It took Shaggy all of 29 seconds into the first round to secure a triangle choke and finish Jay Ellis who trains out of  Neutral Ground in Milwaukee.  Shaggy took the fight on short notice against a fighter with over 40 prefessional fights and was never in doubt he would be victorious.   In true Twisted Fitness fashion, Shaggy showed that hard work and hard training definitely pay off!

Congrats to Sonya who just returned from a weekend of Yoga Trance Dance training with Shiva Rea at the beautiful Kripalu Yoga Center in Massachusetts

Yoga Trance Dance is a meeting of yoga and dance  It is an exploration of the eternal flow of natural movement through yoga.  Beginning with prana initiating yogasanas, yoga trance dance flows into an exploration of free-form, breath driven movement to liberate one’s creative life force.

There were over 80 yoga teachers, practitioners, and dancers attending the training, culminating in a 2 hour YTD Saturday night open to the public.  With over 150 attendees, the energy and flow was incredible.  I wish you all could have been there to experience what I did.

We are planning to have a special YTD in Novemeber to celebrate Sonya’s Birthday!  We will keep you posted on the date and time.

Another Tournament, Another Victory!

Yes, Last weekend was the third installment of the Combat Corner Tournament.  Once again our team showed up in large numbers and brought home numerous medals, etc.  A big congrats to everyone that competed.  We will have some video up shortly to highlight the event.

And of course, a big congrats to Andy “Shaggy” Acker for another Victorious Super Tournament.  Last year Andy destroyed the competition in the 170 lb bracket and this year he was invited back to compete at 185lbs.  While Andy was certainly the Smallest in the division, his superior technique carried him to another glorious victory and another belt to wear with Pride.

Congrats to everyone, and keep up the hard work.  Team Twisted has once again proved that it’s hard work ethic, technique, and conditioning pays off in victory!

Results from NAGA May 30th, 2009 Milwaukee

While Team Twisted only had two competitors make the trip to Milwaukee for NAGA, it was a great success.   Twisted Fitness once again proves it has the highest level of BJJ around.

Andy Acker-2nd place-Absolute Division

(the Absolute division is open to any belt level and any weight class.  While Andy wasn’t one of the biggest, his technique proved hard to handle for all competitors.  Andy, only a Blue belt, defeated a Purple, a Brown, And even a Black belt on his way to the finals of the Absolute division.  Andy lost the finals by a score of 2-1…..it doesn’t get much closer than that.  It was a great finals match and some of the most technical grappling seen at NAGA that day.)

Andy Acker-2nd place-Advanced no gi 160-169lbs

(Again Andy overcame the odds and came second only to a very technichal Black belt from Chicago.  Again, as only a blue belt, Andy competed at a level on par with the toughest black belts.  Twisted Fitness is very proud of his accomplishments!)

Greg Carpenter-1st place beginner no gi

(this was Greg’s first BJJ competition)

Greg Carpenter-3rd place-white belt division

(Greg was well on his way to another first place finish, but was disqualified do to an “illegal takedown” in the semi finals.   The crowd booed, as the the throw seemed to be a legal move and even Greg’s opponent wanted to continue.  The ref decided to let Greg compete for third, which he took with ease.  Greg’s opponent who recieved the so called “illegal takedown” ended up finishing first and we have no doubt that Greg was able to defeat anyone in his divison.  While he was disqulified by the ref, Greg recieved numerous comments from the crowd as to how spectacular and clean the throw was.  We look forward to Greg being a permanent part of our Competition team.

Twisted Fitness took another large step forward recently by bringing in BJJ phenom Cameron Diffley.  Twisted Fitness is planning on having Cameron out at least 4-5 times a year for regular Seminars.  Cameron brought a new game and style to Twisted Fitness and everyone walked away with a wealth of new knowledge.  Cameron was the BJJ coach for Team Forrest Griffin on the 7th season of Spike TV’s “The Ultimate Fighter”.   For more info on Cameron, please click here.
