On February 2nd, We had a visit from an absolute legend in the sport of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Fabio Gurgel, known to many as “The General”, was the guest of honor at our Academy. Fabio is one of the founders of the Alliance Team and operates one of the main Alliance academies in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Fabio carries a reputation for being the “King Maker” when it comes to coaching world champions in BJJ. He has coached some of the greatest names in the sports and helped them attain gold medals in ALL the major tournaments. Fabio is also a 4 time world champion himself. Even with all of these credentials, Fabio is one of the most humble human beings in the sport. He loves to spread the idea of BJJ as a lifestyle and a way to improve all aspects of your life. This always makes his seminars worth while and fun. Both rooms were packed full of people ready to work, sweat, learn, and smile.
For the technique portion, Fabio taught connections from both the Bullfighter pass and the Knee Slice pass. He showed many different ways opponents might defend these passes and how to connect them to other ideas and positions. It was very easy technique to understand, even for the newest of students. Everyone was impressed with ease of learning and the technique seamlessly integrated into their game. It truly was a seminar for everyone!
This last year also marked the 25th Anniversary of the formation of the Alliance Team. Since it’s inception, we as the Alliance team, have won more World Championships than any other team in the History of BJJ. We are also the only team in BJJ history to “Grand Slam” all 4 major tournaments (European Championships, Pan Ams, Brazilian National Championships, and World Championships) in one year! For the celebration of the 25th Anniversary, Alliance released a limited edition run of 200 special uniforms. We were able to get more than 20 for our Academy and we decided to get a picture to commemorate this special occasion. This truly was a special team building event in more ways than we can count.
After the technique portion, Fabio sat the entire group down around the mat and opened it up for questions. He clarified that they can be technique questions, or anything else regarding BJJ. We sat for another hour discussing the ins and outs of the BJJ lifestyle and what it means to him. Staying in shape and being consistent with training were mentioned, but also a big focus on eating healthy, training properly, and showing respect for your training partners. He answered lots of questions, showed many other techniques and really covered a multitude of concepts for life both on and off the mats.
Thanks again to everyone who attended, it always special when we get our team together on the mats for events like this. We are always thankful to have some many wonderful students in our Alliance family, we couldn’t ask for a better group of people to be surrounded by!
