Neuromuscular Therapy
Neuromuscular Therapy (NMT) is a specific treatment approach for the relief of chronic pain and dysfunction. NMT is a form of soft tissue manipulation and style of structural evaluation focused on understanding and treating the underlying reasons for chronic musculoskeletal pain. It addresses 5 elements that cause pain.
1.) Ischemia- Lack of blood flow to tissues which results in hypersensitivity to the touch.
2.) Trigger Points- Highly irritated points in the muscles that refer pain to other parts of the body.
3.) Nerve Compression or Entrapment- Pressure on the verve by soft tissue, cartilage or bone.
4.) Postural Distortions- Imbalance of the muscular system resulting from the movement of the body off the longitudinal, horizontal, or coronal planes.
5.) Other Factors- Impoper nutrition, lack of stretching & exercise, emotional well being, etc.
This specific and scientific approach to muscular pain relief brings about balance between the muscloskeletal system and the nervous system. NMT enhances the function of joints, muscles, and biomechanics (movement) as it releases endorphins, the body’s own natural pain killers. NMT often dramatically increases flexibility, balance, strength and vital life energy by interrupting the pain pathways and improving circulation.
The nervous system participates in all the disease processes that we know of. By eliminating the neuromuscular component in the disease /pain cycle, we can have a profound effect on our total well being.
